7/05/2005 09:38:00 PM - UMO: A Road to Somewhere
UMO is a suite of products itself: Application Update Service, Plugin Finder Service, and Addons. One of the "hot" things with Deer Park right now is the new application update. I'll leave it to Asa to blog about that (with pictures, too). This is a great step for the Mozilla applications.
I can't speak for PFS, but I'm not sure how much of a growth area that really is.
Then comes Addons (AMO). In my opinion, AMO has suffered from too few resources doing too many things. There are several sysadmins covering the Mozilla servers. On website I see a listing of more than 30 servers. I can see how that would keep them VERY busy. Not to mention the plenty of other things they work on. Not to pick on him, but justdave not only covers the servers, he also works on Bugzilla.
I know how it is when you're spending all of your time just trying to keep servers afloat. Thats where I've been for the past 2 weeks.
AMO is relying on a small core group. I know they're very capable people, but with all of the other things they're involved in, I haven't seen much movement for AMO.
Some people think my previous post is right on the mark. Some people are really pissed off at me.
If I made it seem like absolutely nothing has happened, I apologize. There is a lot of development information. There's so much that I don't know what's missing. Ok, so there are some gaps, but nothing jumps out at me as something I'd be able to fill in.
So what is it that I really want to see? I want to see the steps that will get us from where we are now to the coding stage. Off the top of my head:
- How will we prevent recoding the same queries repeatedly?
- Will the be object oriented?
- Where are the common functions going to be located?
- What is the function naming scheme?
- Who is responsible for writing the official policy?
