Call Me Al

My MozBlog

I really loved tabbed browsing in Firefox. For a long time, I used TBE. I know that the Firefox developers recommend against it. It really wasn't that buggy to me. As of RC1, Firefox finally was able to do single-window mode. Mostly. If I try to launch Firefox twice, I get two windows. I don't mind that very much. It seems like a treat when I start closing windows and find a forgotten session.

I don't need TBE. But there are several features that I really want: Double-Click to close tab, Undo Close Tab, Duplicate Tab, Drag and Drop tabs (with indicator).

There are, of course, extensions that do a lot of these. But that means each one must be maintained (or at least the maxVer raised). I was going to list a nice table of all the extensions and their features, but I got tired of writing this post. There's at least one thread on MozillaZine about all of this.

Assuming a Unix version of firefox, you can make it open a new tab when launching twice by editing the shellscript that starts it (in my case, /usr/bin/firefox).

Right near the bottom, there's a command 'openurl' with the parameter 'new-window' - if you change that to 'new-tab', it'll do what you want.
