So is it possible to take the plugin from Netscape 8 and make an extension for Firefox? It would only show pages if you do "Tools -> Show in IE". Of course I'd expect there to be a nice warning bar across the top so that I know I'm surfing with IE. Any link to a different domain would be opened using Gecko.

Even better would be an open-source IE wrapper plugin so that you don't have to steal from Netscape. This plugin could work in Nvu so you can test your own pages. The concept could easily be expanded to include Opera, Konq, and Safari. Trivial, right?

As I recall there is such an extension.

Should it be part of the default build? I'd have to say: no. Simply because people expect Firefox to be secure and cross platform.

That would essentially for W32 from other OS's.
As far as I know, there is only an extension which opens the current webpage in an external IE window...
Haven't looked into the actual Netscape 8 implementation, but i assume they are using the ActiveX control plugin codebase to display something in Internet Explorer.

They did the same to achieve scripting for Windows Media Player 9/10.

P.S. A quote from the developer: "It is extremely, hell-freezing-overly, unlikely that Mozilla is ever going to support ActiveX by default. This plug-in is designed for custom, legacy and intranet solutions and nothing else." Nice that this is part of Netscape 7.1 :\
